LOWELL A. GOLDSMITH, MD, MPH, one of the preeminent leaders in academic dermatology over the past 50 years

Obituary: https://www.hudsonfuneralhome.com/obituaries/dr-lowell-goldsmith

A tribute is being planned during the upcoming APD Annual Meeting. If you have photos or comments you’d like to share for consideration, please send them to katie@theassociationcompany.com

Lowell was a true giant in the field of Dermatology. After joining the Rochester faculty in 1981 as the first James H. Sterner Professor of Dermatology, he established our department in 1987. He also served as acting chair of the Department of Medicine and went on to become SMD Dean in 1996.

Over the years, Lowell raised the profile of Dermatology as his national influence and reputation grew. He served as President of the Society for Investigative Dermatology and President of the Association of Professors of Dermatology, which as you know, now hosts an annual Goldsmith Lecture. He lectured around the world, served on dozens of professional committees and boards, and won numerous awards.

In short, Lowell set the APD on a course for success. And he did it all with warmth and an unwavering commitment to mentoring the next generation.

He will be missed.

Alice Pentland, M.D.
Immediate Past President, APD

The keynote lecture at our annual meeting each year is named in honor of Dr. Goldsmith. Dr. Goldsmith was truly one of the greats who made tremendous contributions to science, administration, and clinical dermatology in a career spanning decades. He was also, as Alice pointed out, a key proponent, supporter and a former President of the APD. His passing is a sad moment for the dermatology and medical communities worldwide, but he leaves a career of accomplishment and service to be celebrated.

Our condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues. Dr. Goldsmith will live on in our minds and hearts forever.

Richard D. Granstein, M.D.
President, APD

Dr. Lowell A. Goldsmith joined the UNC Department of Dermatology in July 1, 2002 and his last position before passing July 10, 2024, was an Emeritus Professor of Dermatology at UNC School of Medicine.

Dr. Goldsmith earned his M.D. degree from State University of New York at Brooklyn, completed his residency at UCLA Medical Center, and later served as a Research Associate at the NIH and Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School and Brandeis University. Lowell was an Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School, Associate Professor and Professor of Medicine & Dermatology at Duke University. Later he served as Professor and Chairman of Dermatology at University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Acting Chairman of Medicine and Dean.

Dr. Goldsmith was a national and international leader in the field of dermatology. He received innumerable awards from the research and clinical community as represented by the Society for Investigative Dermatology and the American Academy of Dermatology. With his broad background, views and energy, he was actively involved in the teaching programs at both UNC and Duke. He always picked the winning teams and was personally proud and pleased of the endowed lectureship project of the APD.

The APD leadership is securing endowment funds from forward looking individuals to support our noble mission of preserving academic dermatology. In particular, we continue to raise funds for first APD named lectureship to recognize a renowned dermatology academician: Dr. Lowell A. Goldsmith. The purpose of this effort is to develop a fund to support a guest lecture by a national leader in fields such as medical education, health care, and research that are appropriate to the APD.

It is extremely important that we all contribute to this important endeavor in Dermatology as a founding member of a group that we are defining as the Friends of Lowell. We believe that completing the Lowell A. Goldsmith Endowment will help enrich the annual APD meeting and have a tremendous impact on all of our academic programs. We hope you will join this effort as a Friend of Lowell. Please contact The APD Office if you have questions and we thank you in advance for your contribution to this effort.
