Chair of the Department of Dermatology, MetroHealth Systems
The new Chair will provide leadership for the Department of Dermatology and its clinical, teaching and research projects. In this context, the Chair reports to the Executive Vice President, Chief Physician Executive and Clinical Officer and is also accountable to the Executive Vice President, Chief Academic Officer.
The successful candidate will be charged with leading the Department of Dermatology with excellence in patient care, education, research, and advocacy. The Chair will be responsible for providing academic leadership for the faculty, residents, medical students and staff in the Department and for providing administrative support to ensure fulfillment of MetroHealth’s mission of serving patients regardless of their financial status, educating learners at all levels of medical education, and promoting innovative research. The Chair will be expected to be actively engaged in scholarly and educational activities under the auspices of an appointment at CWRU.
The Chair of Dermatology will also be responsible for building upon the many key educational and investigative relationships between and among CWRU and regional affiliates. The Chair will champion and promote as well as sponsor faculty development while leveraging the existing strengths of an already strong Department.
The Chair will be called on to provide leadership, creativity, and vision – creating a highly collaborative environment that promotes best practices and generates opportunities for the continued growth of the Department faculty and ultimately the clinical enterprise at MetroHealth. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to think proactively and creatively to improve performance by identifying key strategic opportunities, including potential opportunities to foster development between clinical and academic departments, as well as promoting extramural affiliations, including with universities, community organizations and other regional health care institutions.
Key responsibilities include:
· Provide professional medical direction and expertise as needed to improve medical management and to ensure the delivery of services in a patient-centric manner. Evaluate utilization review studies for adverse trends in hospital utilization, unusual provider practice patterns, adequacy of benefit/payment components and comparative differences in utilization trends by providers. During these reviews, the Chair ensures that:
· A safe environment is maintained for patients
· Root causes of errors are identified and corrected
· Systems are implemented to prevent errors
· The System subscribes to the principles of responsible reporting of adverse occurrences, near misses and safety concerns
· Evidence-based care is provided
· Provide Clinical and Operational leadership by:
· Formulating goals and objectives in accordance with the goals of MHS. In collaboration with the other MetroHealth leaders, developing patient-centric, evidence-based algorithms for population health-based operations, where applicable.
· Working collaboratively to transition the current volume-based healthcare model into a capitated model, ensuring quality and an efficient, cost-effective, patient-centric model.
· Providing leadership and collaborating with other system stakeholders in planning and implementing new services, improving access to health services and enhancing service levels.
· Implementing patient engagement initiatives for the appropriate populations impacted by the service programs.
· Monitoring and evaluating clinical Department performance: quality, productivity, service and financial levels; and effecting changes required for improvement.
· Implementing standards related to provider clinical service, quality and efficiency, including clinical practices, clinical quality, and ensuring patient satisfaction regarding clinical provider activities.
· Managing revenue and expense budgets to achieve financial goals. Together with other hospital leaders, monitoring and managing performance against metrics (budget, quality, patient experience and population health); collaborating on assuring efficiency of care within the respective areas.
· Support the integration of excellent teaching and research programming into the clinical department by:
· Collaborating with hospital leadership and the Chief Academic Officer on integrating research into care delivery.
· Working in partnership with other hospital leaders on approaches to integrating teaching into program operations, where applicable.
· Directing, developing and maintaining academic and research programs within the department.
· Collaborating with other departments and divisions within MHS and CWRU in the development and implementation of physician education programs and opportunities.
· Managing the budget on issues related to teaching and research.
· Design, establish and maintain an organizational structure and staffing by:
· Setting and monitoring clinical performance (quality, productivity and service standards) of staff and enforcing professional standards, protocols, policies, and procedures.
· Collaborating with other hospital leaders in the allocation of current clinical and administrative FTEs needed to support care delivery in medicine; and exploring options for continued development and retention of excellent clinicians including maintaining provider engagement, satisfaction and fulfillment of career goals.
· Work with nursing leadership to develop appropriate care, staffing, and responsibilities to ensure both patient outcomes and financial metrics are met.
· Assume responsibility for faculty recruitment and faculty engagement. Collaborate with other hospitals, and nursing leadership to identify the need for and skill sets of new providers. Develop and sustain physician relationships with community referring physicians to increase potential collaboration and recruitment.
· Participate in the review and assessment, and provide advice on complex, controversial and/or unique claims that are outside the realm of medical policy; solicit and evaluate the advice of outside medical consultants and physicians with respect to complex or controversial claims or experimental and innovative techniques.
· Participate in provider network development and new market expansion with the dyad leadership, Nursing leadership, and other Department Chairs as appropriate; participate in the review, assessment and negotiation of provider contracts as appropriate.
